Why Is My Hair System Lifting? Common Causes and How to Fix Them

A hair system that starts lifting at the front hairline or around the edges a few days after bonding is one of the most common problems wearers run into. It is rarely the adhesive alone. In most cases the cause is something in the preparation, the application or the choice of product, and each of those can be fixed. Here are the usual reasons, roughly in order of how often they are to blame.

1. The skin was not clean and dry

Adhesive bonds to whatever it touches first. If that is natural skin oil, sweat, moisturiser or a film of old glue, the bond is only as strong as that layer. Before every rebond, remove the previous adhesive completely with a dedicated remover such as Ghostbuster or Walker C-22, then clean the bond area and let the skin dry fully. Our guide to removing hair system glue and tape covers this step by step.

A scalp protector, such as GHOSTBOND Scalp Protector or Walker Scalp Protector, leaves a thin film between skin and adhesive. It shields the skin and gives the adhesive a consistent surface to grip.

2. The adhesive layers were not fully dry

GHOSTBOND adhesives are water-based. Each layer goes on milky white and needs to dry clear before the next layer goes on, and before the system is placed. Placing the system onto adhesive that is still wet traps moisture in the bond, and that is one of the quickest routes to early lift. Give every layer the time it needs. A hairdryer on a cool setting speeds things up without overheating the skin.

3. Too much or too little adhesive

Thick layers stay soft in the middle and never set properly, while thin, patchy coverage leaves gaps at the edges where lift begins. Several thin, even layers across the whole bond area work better than one heavy coat. Our step-by-step application guide shows the method.

4. The adhesive does not suit your skin or routine

The GHOSTBOND adhesives are built for different conditions, and using the wrong one for your skin type is a common cause of lift.

  • Classic gives a dependable everyday hold.
  • XL (now Endure) adds extra moisture control for oily skin, active wearers and warm climates.
  • Platinum (now Sport) offers the most strength and heat resistance in the range, for constant sweat and oil.
  • Supreme (now Motion) gives the most invisible finish on lace and poly bases.

If your bond is failing within a few days and your skin runs oily, moving up to XL or Platinum is usually the first change to make. Our GHOSTBOND comparison guide goes into more detail.

5. Sweat is breaking the bond from underneath

Sweat is the enemy of any water-based adhesive. If you train, work somewhere warm or simply perspire heavily, a scalp antiperspirant such as No Sweat applied before bonding reduces the moisture reaching the adhesive. Our guide to scalp antiperspirant for hair systems explains how to use it.

6. The bond was disturbed too soon

A fresh bond keeps strengthening for a while after the system is placed. Heavy exercise, hot showers, swimming or a sauna straight after bonding can weaken it before it has set. Follow the curing guidance for your adhesive, and plan rebonds so they do not fall just before a workout.

7. The base does not fit properly

If the base is too large, creased, or shaped incorrectly at the front, no adhesive will hold it flat for long. Lift that always starts in the same spot, whatever you change, often points to fit rather than glue. If that sounds familiar, our hair system studio in Chipping Sodbury, Bristol can check the fit and cut of your system. You can book through hair4alluk.com.

8. It is simply time for a rebond

Every bond loosens eventually. A single application of GHOSTBOND usually holds for around one to two weeks, depending on your skin, the adhesive and your routine. Some wearers refresh the front edge between full rebonds to stretch that time. Our guide to how long GHOSTBOND lasts covers the factors in detail.

Where to start

If your system is lifting, work through the list in order: clean and dry skin, fully dried layers, the right amount of adhesive, then the right adhesive for your skin. Most problems are solved somewhere in the first four. You can find every adhesive, remover and scalp product mentioned here in our hair system glue and adhesives and glue removers collections, with free UK delivery on orders over £50.
