Walker No-Shine tape with GHOSTBOND hair system adhesives

Which Hair System Adhesive Is Best for Me? Glue, Tape and Wig Adhesive Explained

There is no single best adhesive for every hair system or wig. The right choice depends on how long you want each bond to last, how much you sweat, your skin, the base of your system and how you like to remove it. Get those five things right and the bond holds when you need it to and comes off cleanly when you don’t.

This guide walks through each one, with the GHOSTBOND adhesives and Walker tapes we would point you to, so you can narrow it down quickly.

Find your adhesive

Start with glue or tape

Liquid adhesive, often called hair system glue or wig glue, is brushed onto the base and the skin and dries to a thin, flexible bond. It follows the shape of the head closely and gives a very natural edge, which makes it a popular choice at the front hairline.

Tape comes on rolls or as pre-cut pieces and is quicker and cleaner to apply and remove. Many wearers use both: tape around the back and sides, with a liquid adhesive at the front hairline. Our guide to hair system glue vs tape covers the pros and cons in more detail.

1. How long do you want each bond to last?

This is the biggest single factor, because adhesives and tapes are made for different wear times.

A few days, removing often. Choose an adhesive or tape that is designed to come off easily. GHOSTBOND Daily (formerly Glow Up) uses Peelable Tech for easy removal, and Walker’s 1522 Clear tape is designed for daily wear of one to seven days.

Around one to two weeks. GHOSTBOND Classic gives a reliable, all-day hold that lasts up to four weeks, so it comfortably covers a weekly or fortnightly routine. Walker’s Lace Front tape is rated for two to three weeks.

As long as possible between rebonds. GHOSTBOND Endure (formerly XL) is GHOSTBOND’s all-climate adhesive for multi-week wear. In tape, Walker rates Ultra Hold for up to four weeks or more, and No-Shine for two to four weeks or more.

2. How much do you sweat?

Sweat is one of the most common reasons a bond lets go early. If you train regularly, play sport or work somewhere hot, choose a product made for it. GHOSTBOND Sport (formerly Platinum) is built for active lifestyles, with a hold that resists sweat and scalp oils, and GHOSTBOND describes it as its strongest hold. In tape, Ultra Hold is one of the strongest and tackiest tapes Walker makes.

Preparation matters as much as the adhesive. GHOSTBOND No Sweat Scalp Spray leaves the scalp feeling dry and fresh before adhesive is applied. Our guide to the gym, heat and holidays has more practical tips.

3. What is your skin like?

Oily skin. If your bond tends to lift as the day goes on, oil is a likely cause. GHOSTBOND Sport is sweat and oil resistant, and GHOSTBOND Classic is formulated for oily scalps. Cleaning the skin thoroughly before every bond helps too: see why a hair system lifts.

Sensitive skin. Walker’s No-Shine, Lace Front and 1522 Clear tapes are made with hypoallergenic adhesives, and GHOSTBOND Classic is latex-free and dermatologically tested. If you have a latex allergy, avoid Walker’s German Brown tape, which contains latex. Whatever you choose, patch-test first and follow the instructions on the product. Our guide to hair system adhesive and sensitive skin explains what to look for.

4. Is your system lace or poly?

Lace. On a lace base the finish matters, because anything shiny can catch the light through the lace. GHOSTBOND Motion (formerly Supreme) dries to a matte, no-shine finish designed to blend with skin tones, and Walker’s No-Shine and Lace Front tapes have a dull finish.

Poly (skin). GHOSTBOND Classic suits both lace and poly systems, and Walker’s German Brown is a firm tape with a semi-dull finish that suits poly systems, especially with hard-bond adhesives.

5. How do you want it to come off?

Every adhesive needs the right remover. GHOSTBOND BondGone (formerly Ghostbuster) releases the bond cleanly before you reapply, and Walker C-22 Solvent, Walker’s most popular solvent, works quickly on tape and adhesive. If easy removal is a priority, GHOSTBOND Daily and Walker’s 1522 Clear are both designed for it. See how to remove hair system glue and tape for the full method.

Frequently asked questions

What is the strongest hair system glue?

In the GHOSTBOND range, GHOSTBOND describes Sport (formerly Platinum) as its strongest hold. For the longest wear between rebonds in any climate, Endure (formerly XL) is the one to choose.

Is wig glue the same as hair system glue?

In most cases, yes. GHOSTBOND labels its adhesives as wig glue, and the same adhesives are used for hair systems, lace wigs and toupees.

Which adhesive is best for beginners?

Something that is easy to remove while you get used to bonding. GHOSTBOND Daily and Walker 1522 Clear tape are both designed for shorter wear and simple removal. GHOSTBOND Classic is a reliable next step once you want a longer hold.

Can I use glue and tape together?

Yes. A common approach is tape around the back and sides, where it is quick to apply and remove, with a liquid adhesive at the front hairline for the most natural edge.

Why does my adhesive stop holding sooner than it should?

The usual causes are sweat, oil, skin that was not fully cleaned before bonding, or old adhesive left on the base. Our guide to why a hair system lifts goes through each one.
